Fortunato - the happy one. This been said, one does not have to add anything to describe this handsome young stallion in one word. The Lusitano stallion, who is currently still growing and becoming more muscular, wants to reach for the stars and preferably the stars at the really big show grounds of the world. Exactly there, where the most people and horses are, because this is the most exciting thing for Fortunato. Who would doubt that he wants to go right there, now? Already here at his home barn he prefers to be right where the most things happen. Whether he just stands passively aside or even takes part in producing chaos himself does not really matter - at least he is where everyone else is.
If one reads those lines, he might come to the conclusion Fortunato is just seeking attention all the time. This is not entirely false, but also not correct, because he is always searching for somtehing new, something he has not seen yet and something helping him learn how to deal with it. One could almost call it an infinte search of new tasks, concerning him searching for new things. But if you want to include that he loves his rider's attention, you have to consider another perspective of this young lad. To sum it up one could call him an incredibly curious stallion, who enjoys other's attention, but does not demand it. He is definitely capable of keeping himself busy. A very funny example was him trying to throw one of the brushes with his teeth after examining his equipment that thoroughly, that the box with the brushes nearly broke under his hoof. Of course all this followed by big innocent eyes looking up to you, so you could never ever come to the misconception it was Fortunato who wrecked everything.
"WHAT? You blame ME for doing that? Never!" or something similar has to be in his mind in such situations, since he is always the poor victim and never the one who made all the chaos. How could such an angel cause something bad at all? No way. This is basically what short time visitors learn to think about Fortunato when they get to know him. I do not have to tell you that this is definitely not entirely true, if you call him an angel or whatsoever. But he does prove them wrong himself, showing his high tempered interior as soon as he gets to go outside. Then it is "Action!!" instead of "calm behavior" and enjoying his riders affection. Theoretically we actually would not have to train him every day since he is very much capable of getting himself tired alone. Nevertheless he nearly works every day, since we know how much delight he finds in his training, even though it is definitely not easy to deal with him all the time. Sometimes the handsome lad really brings us to the edge of sense since he causes laughter so many times because of his curiosity. He seems to go like "What is this? And that? And that one over there? And - OH a flower!" and because you nearly can watch him thinking like that it can be very amusing for everyone around.
Sometimes though, he just does not have a good day. Then he basically does what is in his mind and nothing else. Such days are not good for working with him, but you always can calm the storm by riding at the campo instead of the usual work place. Fortunato then seems to have a lot in common with a donkey, who does not want to go on anymore. Sometimes he drives his rider insane with such days. A very good example was him working in walk at the beginning of his career under saddle, since he was still quite unbalanced and faced problems with going slower, than he probably could do. Trot and gallop are so much faster and he did not seem to understand the necessity of going slower than he could, for it took him so much longer!
Nevertheless he already showed and still shows a lot of characteristics of a typical Dressage horse. He is very aware and concentrated throughout the whole training, which is remarkable at such a young age. Exactly the characteristic are demanded for a Purebred Lusitano so we believe that our young lad will reach everything he wants to someday.
